A teacher accused of sexually abusing and murdering his adopted baby son angrily denied the allegations to detectives, telling them, “one day you guys will be in trouble,” a jury heard today. Jamie Varley, 37, vowed to “fight you to the day I die” during questioning over the death of 13-month-old Preston Davey. I dont know how to prove it, but you are wrong because I havent done it, Varley told officers in a video interview shown at Preston Crown Court. Varley, a high school teacher at the time, is charged with Preston’s murder. His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, is accused of allowing the death of the child. Both men face charges of sexual abuse. Jurors have heard that during the four months Preston was in their care at their Blackpool home, he was routinely ill-treated, sexually abused, and physically assaulted, suffering dozens of injuries. Both defendants deny all charges. The couple rushed the unconscious infant to Blackpool hospital on the evening of July 27, 2023. Despite nearly an hour of resuscitation efforts, medics could not save him. While Varley claimed he had left the child alone in the bath for a few minutes and returned to find him drowned, Home Office pathologist Dr. Alison Armour concluded that the child did not drown. Instead, the cause of death was determined to be an upper airway obstruction caused by “a deliberate act of smothering” or the insertion of objects into the mouth. During police interviews, detectives confronted Varley with findings of “abusive trauma” and “forcible penetration.” Varley dismissed the findings as “bullshit.” When challenged regarding intimate photos and videos of the child found on his phone, which prosecutors allege are indecent images, Varley claimed they were innocent attempts at capturing the child’s life, telling officers, “You have got it now as if Im a bloody pervert.” Earlier in the trial, the court saw a video where the infant was left alone in a bath for more than 14 minutes. Varley claimed he was recording from the landing to see how the child reacted to his own company, denying any intent to cause distress or harm. Varley denies murder, manslaughter, assault by penetration, cruelty to a child, grievous bodily harm, and multiple counts related to indecent images. McGowan-Fazakerley denies allowing the death of a child, child cruelty, and sexual assault of a child.
